#710: Ravi Gupta - Master One New Skill Every Year
Ravi Gupta is the founder of RePublic Schools, whose flagship Nashville schools became the first in Tennessee to rank in the top 5% statewide for both growth and achievement. He co-founded Arena, which trained more than 7,000 political staffers, worked on the first Obama campaign, and wrote speeches for UN Ambassador Susan Rice. His new book is The Invisible List: One Passion a Year, Every Year. We talked about... The Anti-Dabbler’s Guide to Mastering One New Skill Every Year, Why Presence Isn’t Enough, Bourdain’s Masterclass in Humility, and Pairing Reasonable Goals With Delusional Ones. You can also WATCH our conversation on YouTube.
A Career (and Life) Gamechanger
Applications are now open for our next Learning Leader Circle. If you want to surround yourself with growth-focused leaders who are striving to get better, then you might be a fit for our Learning Leader Circle. Here's what Keegan Linza (Sales Leader, VMware by Broadcom) said: “Ryan's Learning Leader Circle has been a game-changer for my career. Since I joined Ryan’s circle, I’ve been promoted multiple times, including moving into my first leadership position. Ryan and the other amazing leaders in the group have been a great sounding board for all sorts of leadership challenges like hiring, retention, growth, and dealing with conflict. Ryan’s ability to attract great leaders and spark meaningful conversations are what make his Learning Leader Circles so valuable.” CLICK HERE to apply.
How Ben Affleck Makes Movies
Ben Affleck talks about how he makes movies in this installment of Netflix Film School. He shares advice for directing actors, giving reinforcement, directing yourself, using AI, and creative collaboration.
Some Examples of Going Really Fast
Patrick Collison (Co-Founder of Stripe) published a cool list of examples of people quickly accomplishing ambitious things together. The stories behind each one are fascinating. This is a great reminder that we can do big things IF we have a bias for action. Here's an example -- The Eiffel Tower was built in 2 years and 2 months; that is, in 793 days. When completed in 1889, it became the tallest building in the world, a record it held for more than 40 years. It cost about $40 million in 2019 dollars. Another one... Apollo 8. On August 9, 1968, NASA decided that Apollo 8 should go to the moon. It launched on December 21, 1968, 134 days later.
Wise Words
“Business, like life, is all about how you make people feel. It's that simple... And it's that hard." -- Danny Meyer
