Welcome to Mindful Monday!

This week, we focus on hiring leaders with an edge, typewriter interviews, advice to freshmen, what I've learned from my podcast guests, and some wise words from General Mattis.

#662: Nicholas Thompson - The Running Ground

Nicholas Thompson is the CEO of The Atlantic and author of one of my favorite books of the year, The Running Ground. We talked about consistency over intensity, the impact his dad's wild life had on him, why leaders should move at an uncomfortable pace, how he earned the CEO role at The Atlantic (hired by Laurene Powell Jobs), setting audacious goals, and much more. You can also WATCH our conversation on YouTube.

Typewriter Interviews

I love Austin Kleon's typewriter interviews. He types questions on yellow cards and sends them to his guests/friends/creative people. They type their answers on the cards (and mail them back to Austin). And then he posts them. This one with Chase Jarvis is interesting to me. I particularly liked the part about how Chase approaches interviewing people.

Advice To Freshmen

Here is a very useful post from Avital Balwit (Chief of Staff, Anthropic) about advice for college freshmen. Like a lot of these types of posts, a lot of the advice applies far beyond the people it's written for.

What I've Learned From My Podcast Guests

My podcast, The Learning Leader Show, is an ongoing complex project between people. My friend Jayson Gaignard likes to say, “Nobody is self-made. We are all community-made.” I am proud of the community of learning leaders we’ve built over the past decade and love that we’ve spent so much time learning together. HERE are some things I've learned from my guests.

Wise Words

"If you haven’t read hundreds of books, you are functionally illiterate, and you will be incompetent, because your personal experiences alone aren’t broad enough to sustain you.” - General Jim Mattis

Mindful Monday is a reader-supported publication. If you found it useful, forward it to your friends.
