#708: Danny Meyer - What Could Possibly Go Right?
Danny Meyer is the founder of Union Square Hospitality Group and one of the most influential restaurateurs of his generation. He built New York landmarks like Union Square Cafe, Gramercy Tavern, and Shake Shack... And did it all on one idea he calls enlightened hospitality: that business, like life, is all about how you make people feel. He's the author of the classic Setting the Table and the new What Could Possibly Go Right? You can also WATCH our conversation on YouTube.
You Can Apply To Be In My Next Learning Leader Circle
Applications are now OPEN for my next Learning Leader Circle. If you want to surround yourself with growth-focused leaders who are striving to get better, then you might be a fit for our Learning Leader Circle. Here's what Amy Arnold (SVP, Helios Clinical Research) said about her time in The Learning Leader Circle: “I can’t thank you enough for your time and leadership advice. I feel so grateful to have met you and truly would not be where I am today without your leadership circle. You make such an incredible impact on one’s life, and I hope you realize it. You truly have a gift. Thank you!” CLICK HERE to apply.
How You Chase The Unthinkable
A beautiful essay from Steve Magness on going for the big thing... At the end of the day, whether you are taking on something that no other human in history has done, or just taking a small step that YOU have never done, it’s about freeing yourself up to take that shot. When the race stops being a referendum on your worth, you become freer to race it fully. That’s where true breakthroughs occur. When we’re pushing each other out of a desire to explore what’s possible. When we’re competing in a place of joy and fun, instead of fear or dread. When we stop trying to force the performance, and instead, let go just enough. That’s where the magic happens.
How Aaron Sorkin Thinks
Aaron Sorkin is one of my favorite writers. I've watched his show, The Newsroom, dozens of times (only Seasons 1 & 2; Season 3 isn't as good). And if you've read The Price of Becoming, you know I love his storytelling ethos: "worship at the altar of intention and obstacle." It seems he's on a bit of a press tour to promote his next movie. I've enjoyed watching/reading lots of his interviews. Here's one. A video interview. And another one all about screenwriting.
Wise Words About Noticing The World...
“If you really want to be a game changer, become a master observer. Just the willingness to stop and look at things that no one else has even bothered to look at enables game changers to identify real points of meaning. The simple process of focusing on things that are normally taken for granted can be a source of great power and creativity... We learn when we observe, we pick up on clues, we figure things out. That is what preparation is all about.” – Peyton Manning
