Welcome to Mindful Monday!
My book, The Price of Becoming, is on sale right now on Amazon (not sure why or for how long). So far, it is a USA Today National Bestseller, an LA Times Bestseller, a Publishers Weekly Bestseller, and a Success Magazine Bestseller. I think you'll enjoy it. I appreciate your support!
Here are some things from this week...
- A great conversation with Matt Abrahams about becoming a better communicator
- The Ultimate Career Accelerator - Apply to be in my next Learning Leader Circle
- A documentary you should see (it feels more like a movie)
- Brand is who you are
- Wise words about work and play
#712: Matt Abrahams - "Attention is a gift people give you. If they don't see a return on that, they're gonna check out."
Matt Abrahams is one of the world’s foremost communication experts. He’s a lecturer in strategic communication at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business and bestselling author of Think Faster, Talk Smarter. His focus is the hardest kind of communication: not the rehearsed speech, but knowing what to say when you’re put on the spot: in the interview, the Q&A, the hallway, the toast. We talked about... How to Become a Better Communicator: Speaking With Confidence, Structuring Your Message, and Thinking Fast on Your Feet. You can also WATCH our conversation on YouTube.
The Ultimate Career Accelerator
Applications are now open for our next Learning Leader Circle. If you want to surround yourself with growth-focused leaders who are striving to get better, then you might be a fit for our Learning Leader Circle. Here's what Alyssa LeBarre (Director of Operational Excellence, Insight Global) said: “I love the intentionality of the content and the conversations. I loved that we went deep right out of the gate. It felt scary but also safe. I have never been part of a training that felt as real as this. I was forced to look in the mirror and be honest with myself and really make changes to the way I am living day to day. I can honestly say this was one of the most impactful trainings I have ever attended." CLICK HERE to apply.
You Can See Everything
In 2015, I read a story about this young woman who became a "self-made billionaire." She was the founder/CEO of a new blood testing company called Theranos. I immediately started cold-emailing her, and anyone she might know, trying to get her on The Learning Leader Show. Her name is Elizabeth Holmes. She's since been convicted on four federal counts of fraud for deceiving investors about the capabilities of her blood-testing startup. Nathan Fielder's new documentary, You Can See Everything, is wild. Elizabeth invited Nathan to move in with her for the month prior to her prison sentence starting. Nathan and team filmed everything. The documentary is 3 hours long. It feels more like a movie than a documentary. This is how Austin Kleon described it: "The film wrecked my nervous system. What I saw was a psychological horror movie about the kind of grifters and sociopaths ruining my world — and my city, too!" I went to the movie theater with my wife to watch it. If you haven't been to a movie theater in a while, this is a good reason to go. And Polina Pompliano wrote this thoughtful essay on how the film is "deceiving you."
Brand Is Who You Are
The underlying thing is who you are and what you stand for. What do you believe? How do you see the world? What do you think is worth doing, and what are you unwilling to compromise on? CLICK HERE to read more.
Wise Words
“A master in the art of living draws no sharp distinction between his work and his play; his labor and his leisure; his mind and his body; his education and his recreation. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence through whatever he is doing, and leaves others to determine whether he is working or playing. To himself, he always appears to be doing both.” – Lawrence Pearsall Jacks
