#604: Sharon McMahon - America's Favorite History Teacher

After years of serving as a high school government and law teacher, Sharon McMahon took her passion for education to Instagram, where more than a million people rely on her for nonpartisan, fact-based information as “America's Government Teacher.” Sharon is the author of: The Small and The Mighty – Twelve Unsung Americans Who Changed the Course of History, From the Founding to the Civil Rights Movement. We discussed: How to get out of our echo chambers, being a doer, the commonalities of our best Presidents, and much more. You can also WATCH our conversation on YouTube. Enjoy!

Tom Brady and The Art of Leading Teammates

When our society talks about leaders, we focus on formal roles, such as the CEO. This view undervalues the role of informal leaders—team members who influence outcomes by the tone they set, how they conduct themselves, and how they interact with their peers. Their job title doesn’t include the word “manager,” but they play an outsize role in how teams perform. In this article, NFL great Tom Brady and Nitin Nohria, of Harvard Business School, present a set of principles that people in any realm can apply to help teams successfully work together toward common goals.

A Startup Founder's Journey To $25B (Halliganism's)

I think this is an interesting and useful list of ideas on how to grow your business. It's from former Learning Leader guest (Episode #153), Brian Halligan. Brian co-founded HubSpot and led them to become a $25B company. Here's one of his Halliganism's: Analytical skills are overrated. Taste is underrated. Almost everyone these days has pretty good analytical skills. Vanishingly few people have taste. Figure out who has it and give them power. CLICK HERE to read more.

What Makes Someone Wise?

This recent study explored how people across cultures think of wisdom. The large-scale project required a joint effort of 34 researchers across philosophy, psychology, anthropology, social science, and psychometrics – and from all over the world, connected in a research consortium called The Geography of Philosophy. Wise Words...

"The worst is people trying to emulate a very successful person's asshole-ishness because they think it'll help them get ahead. In reality, the person was successful despite being an asshole."-- Morgan Housel responding to Paul Graham's post: "Half the distinguishing qualities of the eminent are actually disadvantages."

Thank you for reading. Mindful Monday is a reader-supported publication. The best way to support it is to order our book, The Score That Matters. If you've already read it, I'd love for you to CLICK THIS LINK and write a review.
